What’s that I see out there in the woods?
Hundreds of flashing lights everywhere.
What are they? Are we being invaded by aliens?
Are those orbs of lights on UFOs?
And now they are coming closer,
Even up from over the river bank.
They’re surrounding me here on the patio.
Am I to be abducted?
No, they’re friendly. Always were.
They’ve been here for thousands of years. Come out in the springtime.
It’s only fireflies flashing their little behinds to attract a mate.
A beautiful insect orgy of love.
They fly all around me unaware I’m there.
Some even land on me or something on the patio. Just to rest.
Then off they go to continue their mating ritual.
A display that goes on for some time, night after night.
I love to sit and just watch them light up the evening.
Like miniature light bulbs
Flickering off and on
As if in Morse code.
No, I’m not going to be taken by aliens.
They’re just God’s tiny creatures
Who have the ability to be their own lantern in the dark,
And a beacon for love.
